Every wedding is different and unique which is why it interests me so much. One of the most exciting moments while being engaged is figuring out what you are going to wear! Some of us have dreamt of their wedding gown since age 4 while others hope they can just throw on some jeans and call it a day. Then, of course, there are those of you who are like me and are looking for a really memorable experience that will last a lifetime. Being that I went to school for clothing design with a emphasis on wedding gowns, there were several friends and family inquiring whether or not I’d handmake my gown. The thought did cross my mind. Having a good experience throughout this journey will always be my top priority for you, which is why I chose not to make my own gown. If there is any wedding advice that you take from me it is this: if you know something is going to cause you stress – there is no point in continuing down that path.

Working in the bridal industry can be a huge benefit but its even better when you are the bride! Through my time at David’s Bridal and my time as a bride I’ve compiled another list: My 10 Tips For Wedding Gown Shopping.
My top 10 Tips for Wedding Gown Shopping
(5 Dos & 5 Don’ts)
- Do Research But Don’t Have too high of expectations: We’ve all done this one but here is an extra tip; The pictures we see on Pinterest and in magazines aren’t 100% realistic. Yes, you should bring the images to give to the stylist or the consultant so they can get an idea of something you’re interested in but keep in mind that 9 times out of 10 they will not have the exact gown and sometimes nothing in stock even close to the image you brought with you. The stylist will always have your best interest in mind and will be able to use those images as guidelines.
- Do Slow Down: Pretty sure every engaged couple forgets about this one. Generally, you only get married once. Why rush these moments? The stylist will try to get you to order your gown the first day of your shopping trips but its okay to not order right away. Take your time, it is a big purchase. Even if you go out for coffee and come back or book another appointment. Do it! You will have tons of pictures of you in this gown so make sure that its the one you love!
- Do Bring Undergarments: Something so small and minor but extremely important! Most of the time, the salon will provide some options with undergarments but they may not be what YOU desire. They will have longline bras (corset style), regular strapless bras, stick ons bras, various spanks, and different levels of slips. The salon is only so big so keep in mind that not all sizes will be in stock. So my tip here is: if you want to feel comfortable and ‘secure’ pre-order the undergarment of your choice -or- be open minded when during your appointment when it comes to what you are going to where as undergarments. And ladies, do be sure to wear the right kind of underwear 😉
- Do Take Pictures (if Salon allows): If the salon that you are trying dresses on at allows for photos to be taken, definitely take advantage of that. Doing so will give you a chance to refer back to them to either compare them to each other or if you’ve chosen a gown it will help you with making other decisions along your wedding journey. It is also good for putting in your scrapbook!
- Do ask to try on veils & accessories: Every wed-to-be deserves to have a special accessory. Even if you think that you don’t want a veil or tiara you should still try it on. Why? I cannot count how many times I’ve gotten my brides to fall in love with a veil when they weren’t expecting it. You have nothing to lose!
And here are your don’ts…
- Don’t forget to know your potential shoe height: Your gown alterations will change depending on what shoes you are going wear. I know it can be difficult to get your shoes before the dress appointment so, here’s my tip: bring any pair of shoes that are at least the height you want. That way, you get a feel for walking in your potential gown and you can see if you are going to need to add the hem cost into your budget!
- Don’t forget to get a preservation kit: One of the best purchases I made! David’s Bridal has a kit you can buy; $99 with buying your gown with David’s Bridal or during a flash sale otherwise it is $189. Depending on your gown style dry cleaning it can cost up to $500! Why not get this kit and save! You get it cleaned, preserved, buttons fixed (for extra) and more! Here ya go –> Preservation Kit You won’t regret it!
- Don’t bring a large group: The moment you get to try on wedding gowns is so precious. You want this moment to be calm, relaxing and fun. This tip is strictly because when you bring more friends and family into the appointment – you lose site of your wants and needs and it will make your appointment go longer which means less gowns to try on. You want to keep in mind that you are wearing the gown and you should feel happy in your choice. Having several opinions coming your way is only going to stress you out because you are going to want to please everyone.
- Don’t come without an appointment & don’t be late: This is an important moment so make an appointment especially if it is a weekend. We all know that sometimes, things just come up and you hope and pray they can squeeze you in but to have a stress-free experience, prep! That being said, when you make your appointment – Try not to be late! These appointments can create a domino affect if you aren’t on time. You wouldn’t want your appointment being pushed because a different bride was taking over your appointment because they were late would you? So, be respectful and on time!
- Don’t forget, everything costs: Oh the part that none of us enjoy. When we are enjoying ourselves in moments like feeling so beautiful in a stunning gown with our friends and family by our side we forget that those beautiful items cost. So my tip here is that go into the appointment with a budget; understanding that everything you add is extra money. And my friend, do not and I repeat, do not try on a gown that is over budget unless you are 100% okay with falling in love with something you cannot afford. All of your accessories, undergarments, the gown, alterations, and other added items are all separate costs. If you can take anything from these tips take this one: protect your budget.
