My husband and I have created a modern woodland nursery for our new baby boy August. We live in an apartment so, the idea of getting exactly what we wanted wasn’t in the cards for us from the start. Even though we had a challenge ahead of us, I was determined to make our second/spare bedroom work for the perfect nursery.
Ever since Zach and I got married I dreamt about starting a family and having a room specifically for our future baby. Of course, it’s hard to do that when you have a low income and living in a city that even studios cost $1200 a month… Luckily, we were able to find an apartment that we could afford that had two bedrooms. We’ve been at this apartment for 4 years now and have realized the positives outweigh the very few negatives.
It has two very good sized bedrooms; one has always been our room – of course and one that we’ve used as our guest room, office, and storage (because it’s quite large!) When we found out we were pregnant – we had a lot to think about when it came to which room we were going to have the nursery.
Part of me said, “let’s move, I don’t think these rooms are right for baby boy’s room”. So I searched and searched and nothing else out there was as perfect as this apartment. So we decided that if we were going to stay, we would need to switch the rooms entirely and give August our room. Oooofta right? Sounds easy… but boy was it a MESS.
When you have so much ‘stuff’ already – which means no more room for new things – it can make it pretty difficult to dedicate an entire room and closet to a newborn that doesn’t really care. My dedication to making sure that we were organized and had a pretty space for August was high enough to make the move.
I had multiple themes for the nursery but first we needed to find out the gender! I wanted to cater to one gender but not in the stereotypical way of pink for girls and blue for boys. My husband is very outdoorsy and so when we found out we were having a boy – a woodland theme was a no brainer! The way to put my stamp on the theme was I made it more modern than kidish.
Take a Look
We decided to paint one of the walls a deep forest green. This was the first time Zach and I have ever painted anything on this scale before! Funny enough – it wasn’t even that big of a project but, it was definitely something new for us!
Little Dude Sign | Wire Fox Wall Decor | Wire Deer Wall Decor | Wooded Crib Arm | Mattress
Mattress Pad | Mattress Cover | Gelato 4 in 1 Crib | Stuffed Fox | Warmies Bear
I didn’t want the green wall to be overshadowed by a bunch of ‘noise’ on the wall so I decided to go simple on the decor. I saw these wire animal fixtures and knew 100% that I wanted them in the nursery. We got 3 different woodland animals – deer, fox and a bear. The little dude sign was an impulse buy from Hobby Lobby – because who can go to Hobby Lobby without buying something. The blanket was a baby shower gift from a dear friend which goes wonderfully in the nursery! I’m obsessed with the mobile because this was the mobile that both my mom and Zach’s mom built together during our gender reveal gathering. It truly fits perfectly! I love the choice of crib because of how subtle it is and it doesn’t break the bank. My parents gifted us the crib, chair and dresser for the nursery and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
Soft White Dresser | Changing Pad | Changing Pad Cover | Changing Pad Liner
Wire Bear Wall Decor | Wooden Picture Frames | Shusher | Diaper Genie
Our bedding is from the Target Hearth & Hand collection. The basket is from Marshalls and the mirror is from Home Goods! In-between the bed and dresser we have a drying rack that we got from Walmart.
This side of the room was a little bit more difficult to decorate. The room is more of a rectangle which makes figuring out where all the furniture should go a little challenging. Another complication was that I wanted to make sure that if we were to having any guests visit us that we could still accommodate them with ease. However, the daybed really made figuring out what to put on the wall a struggle. So, Zach and I came up with the perfect idea to be… not so perfect. We randomly put up picture frames that displayed our friends and family for August. Above the dresser I knew I wanted to have a mirror because I’ve been told that it is a good way to distract baby from being changed.
Glider | Basket | End Table | Pillow | Sound Machine
Of course, every nursery needs a classy chair and end table for those late nights trying to sooth baby back to bed! We also got this really cute mini ‘bookshelf’ from Zach’s mom. Let’s just say we filled it up extremely fast with all the lovely books we’ve received from friends and family!
Overall, I’m in love with our nursery! Naturally, things would be a little different if we were in our own house but I think that what we were given we made it special. The green wall really pops and I love how it nods to being woodland without being too one-gendered. The other nice thing I like about this space is I feel like if we were to have guests stay the night they wouldn’t feel too out of place!
I’d love to know what you think about our nursery! So, if you wouldn’t mind leaving a comment below or even shooting me an email I’d love to hear from you! Thank you for reading!
